O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high-school student. She was able to advance into the top 100 because of the enthusiasm shown by judges in her performances. O'Neil received excellent praise from her judges. She experienced significant defeats during the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put in the bottom three spots and bottom two as well as the bottom two. The judges were shocked, and they suggested that the public decide for Melissa who was one of the contestants with the greatest ability to sing. O'Neil was consistently delivering stellar performances since then, always finished in the third place. Her performance on the 7th of September in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that the judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil received a call right away from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
